Exohedral physisorption of ambient moisture scales non-monotonically with fiber proximity in aligned carbon nanotube arrays.

Here we present a study on the presence of physisorbed water on the surface of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in ambient conditions, where the wet CNT array mass can be more than 200% larger than that of dry CNTs, and modeling indicates that a water layer >5 nm thick can be present on the outer CNT surface. The experimentally observed nonlinear and non-monotonic dependence of the mass of adsor...

Super-long aligned TiO2/carbon nanotube arrays.

5 mm long aligned titanium oxide/carbon nanotube (TiO(2)/CNT) coaxial nanowire arrays have been prepared by electrochemically coating the constituent CNTs with a uniform layer of highly crystalline anatase TiO(2) nanoparticles. While the presence of the TiO(2) coating was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, the r...

Feedstock Diffusion and Decomposition in Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays

Feedstock diffusion and decomposition in the root growth of aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays is discussed. A nondimensional modulus is proposed to differentiate catalystpoisoning controlled growth deceleration from one which is diffusion controlled. It is found that, at current stage, aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) arrays are usually free of feedstock diffusion resistance. Howe...

Friction and adhesion properties of vertically aligned multi- walled carbon nanotube arrays and fluoro-nanodiamond films

Sliding friction and adhesion properties of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (VAMWCNT) arrays and fluoro-nanodiamond (F-ND) films on glass substrate have been quantitatively investigated in current study using atomic force microscopy. It was found that VAMWCNT arrays result in lower friction compared to F-ND films. Friction forces were also found to be consistently higher in nitr...

Height independent compressive modulus of vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays.

The compressive modulus of dense vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays synthesized by chemical vapor deposition was investigated using an optically probed precision-loading platform. For CNT arrays with heights ranging from 15 to 500 microm, the moduli were measured to be about 0.25 MPa and were found to be independent of array height. A continuum mechanics model based on ...
